Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 4 Rotate cover
Another volume in the Golden Collection series, this one includes a few themes that would be present in later volumes and even series. Dropped was the Whoopi Goldberg intro, in favor of the disclaimer on the DVD back cover.

Disc 1 is once again the Bugs Bunny showcase; nothing much has changed, but there are notably two shorts that will likely not see the light of television appearances nowadays: "Southern Fried Rabbit" and "Mississippi Hare". Disc 2 is the Frank Tashlin showcase disc, containing a significant portion of his 1930s shorts and a selection of his shorts when he rejoined the studio in the mid-1940s. Disc 3 provides nearly the rest of Speedy Gonzales' filmography before the studio's shutdown, including three shorts from the DePatie-Freleng era; "Mexican Cat Dance" was the only short before DePatie-Freleng that was left out. Disc 4 focuses on cartoons that featured cats, with a selection of one-offs and some with main characters.

In terms of bonus features, the Bugs Bunny Superstar documentary was included, which would notably be remastered on DVD by Warner Archive in 2012. None of the shorts present in that documentary are restored. A "new" 2006 short that was dubbed "Porky and Daffy in the William Tell Overture" was specifically created for this release, which is a cutdown of a segment from the Bugs Bunny's Overtures to Disaster TV special from 1991. This was also likely the first time the wider public got to see footage from Warner Bros. breakdown reels that were often made internally but never actually shown to the public until now, which was included particularly to showcase a scene of Porky Pig swearing. That segment was actually directed by Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton, done in 1939 after Friz Freleng left the studio for MGM.

This was the last release for non-region 1 for the series during its initial run. International releases of this volume have notably removed several shorts for one reason or another (including but not limited to racially insensitive content or suicide gags), ironically contrary to the fact that the set was targeted to adult collectors and not family audiences.

Collector's Recommendation Score

What's this? This is a rating of how recommended it is to obtain the set, rated from a scale of 0 to 10. This is automatically done and is calculated from three criteria by default: how many shorts are new to the format (20%), how many shorts is an upgrade from previous releases (30%), and how many shorts don't have an upgrade in future releases (50%). The higher the score, the more recommended the set is.

Each short in itself contributes an equal amount, and miscellaneous and post-Golden Age shorts are also included. Thus, even if all Golden Age shorts are upgraded in later sets, shorts in other categories may still prevent the set from scoring a 0.

For compilation sets, only the amount of shorts without a better version on later sets are scored for up to 10 points, as they tend to be repackages of previously released sets.

Any set that scores 0 on new-to-format or upgrade tests are deemed as double dip-only sets and instantly fails with a 0. Sets that also scores 0 on the "don't have an upgrade" test are also deemed as obsolete, usurped sets and instantly fails with a 0. As more sets get released, the score may be subject to change.

This is not an exhaustive rating on the set itself in terms of quality, but rather a marker on how worthwhile it is the obtain the set for a complete collection in the most cost-efficient way. Thus, sets with a higher score are a much better value for your cash than lower rated ones; sets rated with a 0 are generally a waste of cash.
This set has achieved a Collector's Recommendation Score of 8.213 out of 10, based on the sum of the score from the following categories:
  • New-to-format score (up to 2 points): 1.93
  • Upgrade score (up to 3 points): 3
  • Doesn't have an better version score (up to 5 points): 3.28

It is recommended to get this set for collection's sake, as it currently contains a significant portion of the best versions of the cartoons available. The set may contain a small amount of double dips or shorts that have been upgraded that dips the rating down, but not enough to deter collecting.
