Looney Tunes Collector's Choice: Volume 3 Rotate cover
The third volume continues on the trend of having a wider variety of shorts. This time around, a few pre-1935 shorts are included, notably the first color cartoon from the studio, "Honeymoon Hotel", alongside the only Merrie Melodies short starring Buddy. A lot of Bugs' remaining filmography yet to be released to disc has also been squeezed into here, cleaning up nearly all "safe" Bugs shorts. Most are pretty much "last and least" choices, since they're often considered by fans and animation buffs as the weakest Bugs shorts ("Pre-Hysterical Hare" and "Dumb Patrol" speak for themselves).

Unlike previous volumes, only one short is completely newly restored, being "Mexican Joyride". Another short was re-restored again, being "Riff Raffy Daffy". The reason for this is using a Super Cinecolor print. Around the time the short was restored for the Hilarious Ham Super Stars set, the short had its original Technicolor camera negative lost, thus leaving the version with the sharpest picture unavailable. The only other option was to use 35mm Cinecolor-based prints that were shipped to theaters. Hilarious Ham ended up using one from a Cinecolor print, but this set upgrades the short to a Super Cinecolor print, which used a three-strip coloring process over the regular Cinecolor's two-strip coloring process. The result was a bit more vibrant colors compared to the Hilarious Ham print, even if the picture was still rather soft.

"Punch Trunk", which was previously available on disc unrestored via the sixth volume of Golden Collection, has been released as a restored print for the first time here.

Notable inclusions in this set also include "Hobo Bobo", which has its original titles restored for the first time, albeit with the incorrect opening rings due to extensive film damage of the original title master. A lot of leftover proto-Elmer and Egghead shorts were cleaned up here, as denoted on the back cover. Lastly, it finally includes "China Jones", a short that edges within the "banned" territory, hasn't aired on television since Nickelodeon pulled the shorts in the late 1990s, and was originally intended to be included on the Frustrated Fowl Super Stars set before it was pulled due to executive backlash.

Collector's Recommendation Score

What's this? This is a rating of how recommended it is to obtain the set, rated from a scale of 0 to 10. This is automatically done and is calculated from three criteria by default: how many shorts are new to the format (20%), how many shorts is an upgrade from previous releases (30%), and how many shorts don't have an upgrade in future releases (50%). The higher the score, the more recommended the set is.

Each short in itself contributes an equal amount, and miscellaneous and post-Golden Age shorts are also included. Thus, even if all Golden Age shorts are upgraded in later sets, shorts in other categories may still prevent the set from scoring a 0.

For compilation sets, only the amount of shorts without a better version on later sets are scored for up to 10 points, as they tend to be repackages of previously released sets.

Any set that scores 0 on new-to-format or upgrade tests are deemed as double dip-only sets and instantly fails with a 0. Sets that also scores 0 on the "don't have an upgrade" test are also deemed as obsolete, usurped sets and instantly fails with a 0. As more sets get released, the score may be subject to change.

This is not an exhaustive rating on the set itself in terms of quality, but rather a marker on how worthwhile it is the obtain the set for a complete collection in the most cost-efficient way. Thus, sets with a higher score are a much better value for your cash than lower rated ones; sets rated with a 0 are generally a waste of cash.
This set has achieved a Collector's Recommendation Score of 9.84 out of 10, based on the sum of the score from the following categories:
  • New-to-format score (up to 2 points): 1.84
  • Upgrade score (up to 3 points): 3
  • Doesn't have an better version score (up to 5 points): 5

It is highly recommended to get this set for collection's sake, as it currently contains the best versions of the cartoons included on the set with minimal double dips. Most of the shorts featured on the set has yet to be upgraded to a better version or is in their best possible version if they're restored in HD.
