Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 6

Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 6 Rotate cover
The final volume of the Golden Collection series. Unlike most other series, this one had quite a ceremonious ending, with even some shorts selected by fan consensus. Notably, due to the large usage of wartime shorts and the appearance of Bosko, the disclaimer on the back of original 2008 releases mentioned the volume as "is not suitable for children" instead of "may not be suitable for children". This was reverted to the latter text in all reissues.

Disc 1 was no longer the primary Bugs Bunny showcase; it instead served as the all-stars disc for the main cast. Disc 2 aims for patriotic shorts themed around wartime and capitalism. Disc 3 focuses on early shorts, with notable inclusions of Bosko and Buddy. Disc 4 features heavily requested one-shot shorts that were not included in previous volumes.

Probably what stands out is that there's a notable lack of commentaries compared to earlier volumes, largely a product of the previous volume selling poorly during its initial run. Also implemented are a few bonus cartoons that were chosen by Warner Home Video, who chose the best print they had available instead of having the restoration team restore the shorts as necessary. As a result, only 3 of the 15 bonus shorts are restored in some manner, and only 1 was properly done in the same manner as the other Golden Collection prints, being "Bartholomew Versus the Wheel". "Rabbit Rampage" was infested with DVNR, while "Boyhood Daze" was a 1998 dubbed version. The latter two shorts were later re-restored years later. Surprisingly, some of these shorts have additional bonus music (or music/sound effects) tracks that are only present on this release. Warner Archive has openly mentioned that these bonus cartoons in this volume are not considered official releases, so they're prone to being re-released in later sets, which was at least done for a small amount of the shorts. Nearly all the bonus shorts have a known restoration nowadays.

For many, the series ended on a pinnacle of quality for home media releases that would rarely be reachieved even in later sets.

Collector's Recommendation Score

What's this? This is a rating of how recommended it is to obtain the set, rated from a scale of 0 to 10. This is automatically done and is calculated from three criteria by default: how many shorts are new to the format (20%), how many shorts is an upgrade from previous releases (30%), and how many shorts don't have an upgrade in future releases (50%). The higher the score, the more recommended the set is.

Each short in itself contributes an equal amount, and miscellaneous and post-Golden Age shorts are also included. Thus, even if all Golden Age shorts are upgraded in later sets, shorts in other categories may still prevent the set from scoring a 0.

For compilation sets, only the amount of shorts without a better version on later sets are scored for up to 10 points, as they tend to be repackages of previously released sets.

Any set that scores 0 on new-to-format or upgrade tests are deemed as double dip-only sets and instantly fails with a 0. Sets that also scores 0 on the "don't have an upgrade" test are also deemed as obsolete, usurped sets and instantly fails with a 0. As more sets get released, the score may be subject to change.

This is not an exhaustive rating on the set itself in terms of quality, but rather a marker on how worthwhile it is the obtain the set for a complete collection in the most cost-efficient way. Thus, sets with a higher score are a much better value for your cash than lower rated ones; sets rated with a 0 are generally a waste of cash.
This set has achieved a Collector's Recommendation Score of 7.654 out of 10, based on the sum of the score from the following categories:
  • New-to-format score (up to 2 points): 1.85
  • Upgrade score (up to 3 points): 2.92
  • Doesn't have an better version score (up to 5 points): 2.88

It is recommended to get this set for collection's sake, as it currently contains a significant portion of the best versions of the cartoons available. The set may contain a small amount of double dips or shorts that have been upgraded that dips the rating down, but not enough to deter collecting.
