So it begun - MGM/UA Home Video began their efforts to release the entire AAP library onto LaserDisc in 1991, including 70 shorts released on 10 sides. This would be the formula for most of the later releases, with the exception being the last. This was also the only volume that was later fully released to VHS in 1992, although with each side sold separately on a single VHS tape each, being labeled as ten volumes corresponding to their side on the LaserDisc release.
Each side of the discs represents a specific theme that includes 7 shorts each:
Side 7 notably houses "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips" in original printings of the LaserDisc (alongside all printings of side 7 on VHS, known as "Bugs Bunny by Each Director"), which was changed to "Racketeer Rabbit" in later reprintings. This change was done around February 1995 due to backlash from the Japanese American Citizens League civil rights organization, which protested the inclusion of the "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips" short on the VHS release of side 7, which was cited as being inappropriately marketed to a set targeted to family audiences. While MGM/UA originally defended their decision, they later relented and recalled the VHS and LaserDisc sets, including the aforementioned short, replacing it with "Racketeer Rabbit". About 8,000 copies of the original pressing of the LaserDisc were known to be sold before it was recalled, making this set very valuable to find with the original "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips" short.
For simplicity purposes, the VHS release is mentioned by the entire box set that was also sold in stores that contains all 10 volumes, released as 5 VHS tapes. If you have individual volumes only, you will need to exclude shorts from the sides you are missing from the LaserDisc counterpoint.
- Side 1 (Disc 1) is the 1930s musical selection that showcases several early Merrie Melodies shorts that were centered around musical themes.
- Side 2 (Disc 1) provides a selection of shorts that represent the first appearance of major stars. Due to MGM/UA being unable to use shorts from the B&W Sunset package, Daffy's first short is represented as "Daffy Duck & Egghead" instead of "Porky's Duck Hunt".
- Side 3 to 6 (Discs 2 & 3) includes a selection of shorts that targets a specific director. Side 3 is Tex Avery, side 4 is Bob Clampett, side 5 is Chuck Jones, and side 6 is Friz Freleng.
- Side 7 (Disc 4) includes one Bugs Bunny short represented by each major director at the time, with Friz Freleng being represented twice.
- Side 8 (Disc 4) provides "1940s zanies", or more specifically a selection of mid-1940s shorts that often feature some of the most "screwball" moments from Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, and Frank Tashlin.
- Side 9 (Disc 5) showcases a selection of Hollywood-themed cartoons.
- Side 10 (Disc 5) provides some of the more popular Bugs Bunny shorts, including the entirety of the Bugs/Cecil trilogy.
Side 7 notably houses "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips" in original printings of the LaserDisc (alongside all printings of side 7 on VHS, known as "Bugs Bunny by Each Director"), which was changed to "Racketeer Rabbit" in later reprintings.
