The absolute final VHS series for the retail market, what was planned as the "next generation" of releases, ended up being not only a flop but also a huge setback for contemporary collectors at the time.
The series made a premiere start with two Marvin-related volumes in 1998, followed by its official launch in 1999. In order to better promote the series, all previous VHS and LaserDisc releases were discontinued and removed from print by the time the 1999 wave was released. Due to improved VHS tape models, they held more shorts than previous releases, usually around 10. These releases were targeted towards children, although there is a hint of shorts not released on home media in order to get collectors involved.
This unfortunately left new collectors at the time in a limbo state. Previous VHS and LaserDisc releases were no longer made available, and yet the current releases pale in scope in comparison to previous series. The series ended unceremoniously in 2000 with a Taz volume that was primarily double dips from previous releases.
