The Golden Age of Looney Tunes: Volume 4 Rotate cover
For a change, this volume that was released in 1993 actually ended up with "73" shorts this time. Why though? Turns out that one of the sides happened to include three Private Snafu cartoons as a bonus, which fell under the public domain and wasn't officially in the AAP nor Sunset library.

Each side of the discs represents a specific theme. All sides except sides 1 and 8 have 7 shorts:

  • Side 1 (Disc 1) is the Bugs Bunny showcase, which also includes "Any Bonds Today?" (which fell under the public domain and was not officially in the AAP package) and a surprising double dip of "A Wild Hare". The reason for the latter was a bit astonishing though - it was restored with its original titles for the first time here (albeit with the wrong opening music). Accounting for "Any Bonds Today?", 8 shorts are on this side.
  • Side 2 (Disc 1) features Chuck Jones' early works that were often made in a Disney-esque fashion.
  • Side 3 (Disc 2) is dedicated to Friz Freleng and contains cartoons directed by him.
  • Side 4 (Disc 2) is the "cartoon all-stars" side, which included several supporting characters and a couple with major stars.
  • Side 5 (Disc 3) is themed around radio and/or their celebrities at the time.
  • Side 6 (Disc 3) provides a handful of one-off cartoons from the 1940s.
  • Side 7 (Disc 4) showcases the spot-gag/travelogue cartoons that were primarily directed by Tex Avery.
  • Side 8 (Disc 4) releases a handful of shorts directed by the directing duo Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton, alongside the three aforementioned Private Snafu shorts.
  • Side 9 (Disc 5) practically finishes up the rest of Sniffles' filmography that wasn't released in prior volumes.
  • Side 10 (Disc 5) features a handful of early musical Merrie Melodies shorts from the 1930s.

For a good while, this was the last time anyone saw any releases from this series.

Collector's Recommendation Score

What's this? This is a rating of how recommended it is to obtain the set, rated from a scale of 0 to 10. This is automatically done and is calculated from three criteria by default: how many shorts are new to the format (20%), how many shorts is an upgrade from previous releases (30%), and how many shorts don't have an upgrade in future releases (50%). The higher the score, the more recommended the set is.

Each short in itself contributes an equal amount, and miscellaneous and post-Golden Age shorts are also included. Thus, even if all Golden Age shorts are upgraded in later sets, shorts in other categories may still prevent the set from scoring a 0.

For compilation sets, only the amount of shorts without a better version on later sets are scored for up to 10 points, as they tend to be repackages of previously released sets.

Any set that scores 0 on new-to-format or upgrade tests are deemed as double dip-only sets and instantly fails with a 0. Sets that also scores 0 on the "don't have an upgrade" test are also deemed as obsolete, usurped sets and instantly fails with a 0. As more sets get released, the score may be subject to change.

This is not an exhaustive rating on the set itself in terms of quality, but rather a marker on how worthwhile it is the obtain the set for a complete collection in the most cost-efficient way. Thus, sets with a higher score are a much better value for your cash than lower rated ones; sets rated with a 0 are generally a waste of cash.
This set has achieved a Collector's Recommendation Score of 5.786 out of 10, based on the sum of the score from the following categories:
  • New-to-format score (up to 2 points): 1.86
  • Upgrade score (up to 3 points): 2.79
  • Doesn't have an better version score (up to 5 points): 1.14

It might not be ideal to get this set for collection's sake. It contains significant amounts of double dips and/or inferior versions of the shorts and have likely been usurped by better volumes and releases. If this set is old, most of the shorts might have been updated to better versions. You will likely get a better value getting a higher rated set.
